Jason Friend is an award winning photographer based in the North-East of England. Not only an acclaimed landscape photographer, Jason is also the author of ten books, which he has completed over a decade of working as a professional photographer.

Jason’s images have been reproduced in numerous printed and online publications throughout the world, including the Telegraph, Guardian, Australian Geographic, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Sunday Times Travel Magazine and Rough Guides.

Jason regularly undertakes photography commissions for corporate clients including local authorities, commercial operations and charitable operations. In addition to his editorial and commercial photography activities, Jason also delivers a range of private and group photography workshops throughout Northumberland and Tyneside.

In recent years, black and white has seen a resurgence of interest and a new appreciation. It shouldn’t be a surprise, since black and white offers a certain mood and timeless appeal. Digital black and white photography possesses a classic, if not elegant, quality.

Some people say that colour remains King, I can understand that as there is nothing like an eye popping image that just draws the viewer into it. However, the impact that good/great black and white images can have is I think sometimes even greater.

Black and white photography is still regarded as a favourite with many photographers – dull landscape scenes become more dramatic with black and white photography. Black and white landscape photography is becoming popular again and is more suitable for taking images when the day is dull or too bright. This is not a ‘how to book’, it is not a training aid, it is not a tricks and tips book. This is a book of stunning black and white landscape and seascape photography, a Portfolio of Jason’s work. Jason has kindly allowed me to include four of the 46 images in this short review, I picked the ones that were my favourite of the bunch, having said that, they are all very sepecial.

After a steep scramble down from the roadside Jason managed to take this shot at Loch Laggan, Scottish Highlands, Scotland. He considers this shot to be a work in progress, a common occurrence when he may spend years revisiting a location.
